Learning about business from a sports legend

Jimmy Johnson coached the Dallas Cowboys for five incredibly successful seasons in the late 80s through the early 90s. But it’s not just the two Super Bowl wins that cemented Johnson’s position as a legendary coach. It’s his larger-than-life personality that still makes him one of the most engaging and inspirational speakers that I have ever heard.

Last week, Agilis had a privilege of sponsoring Jimmy Johnson’s keynote at the NACD 2019 Annual Meeting in Florida. Johnson’s address invoked anecdotes from his days as a head coach for both college football and the NFL, he told stories from his time working as an analyst on Fox Sports and from being a contestant on a Survivor show. He spoke for 90 minutes, and the audience hung onto his every word.

So, you are probably wondering – what does a guy like Jimmy Johnson can possibly say to a room full of chemical distributors? Johnson’s message was universal. It transcended the world of sports and business. It focused on personal development, cooperation, growth and partnership. Jimmy Johnson’s speech was centered around his now famous adage: “Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a person what he could be or should be and he would become what he could be or should be.” And it was readily and completely accepted by an audience of seasoned business professionals.

Agilis had a very successful showing at the exhibit hall. We demonstrated our FastCommerce solution – the way to quickly and cost-effectively build branded commerce portals for chemical producers and distributors. There were great discussions, new acquaintances were made, and follow-ups scheduled.

Another successful show under our belt. And I have a feeling that this one is going to stick with me for a while. It was my first-time hearing Jimmy Johnson speak, and his common, yet universal wisdom about having high expectations for yourself and others is definitely something that resonates strongly with me. Thank you NACD for running a great event and for giving us an opportunity to meet a legend – in sports, business, and life.
